Name: | Buffy Summers |
---|---|
Birthdate: | Jan 19 |
Location: | Sunnydale, California, United States |
Protagonist of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She hangs out in cemeteries a lot. Mun can be found at plurk. You can also DM this journal. I have a Tara journal as well:
definitelygay.
Buffy is a short, long-haired blonde with green eyes. She doesn't look at all unusual, unless you catch her beating on a creature which looks like it should break her in half. Or carrying her weapons around a cemetery.
As the Slayer, she is the Chosen One, the one girl in all the world who can fight the forces of darkness. As a person, she cares about going to school and college, having relationships, and being girly. The Slayer does not walk in this world, but Buffy does.
Buffy is motivated to protect people, preferably with a good work-life balance. She wants to help others, but she also fights to have ownership over her own life, to stay connected to the larger human world. She keeps herself together to provide literal and figurative strength for others, sometimes to her own detriment.
Her destiny as the Slayer is unwanted, and with her background as a normal, privileged, and popular girl, she feels entitled to reject it. She does so several times during the first few years after being Called. However, Buffy as a person cannot abide seeing people get hurt when she can stop it, particularly if a friend is the one in danger. Every time she quits, she takes up the mantle as soon as she sees someone needing her. Her new friends are about to get killed because the town she’s moved to is on a Hellmouth? She gets back in the game. When best friend Willow is traumatized by increasing vampire attacks, Buffy accepts her prophecied death and went back to Slaying regardless. When a girl she doesn’t even like loses her boyfriend under mysterious circumstances, Buffy comes out of isolation in L.A. and reclaims her identity as both Buffy and the Slayer to save her. Thus, she comes into the role not as a girl trained all her life for duty, or one suddenly gaining power to enjoy, but as someone who accepts that the job has to get done and she’s been landed with the power to do it, for the sake of everyone else around her.
Given this, she spends much of the series trying to have her own life, goals beyond Slaying. She stays in school, keeps up relationships with friends, her mom, and lovers. Even inappropriate lovers, such as vampires. Her efforts are put to the test as she starts losing the things she loves, and even faced with the choice to sacrifice them in order to do the right thing as the Slayer or to sacrifice the good of others by doing the right thing as Buffy. Namely, when a newly ensouled boyfriend Angel and her innocent sister Dawn have to die to save the world. Buffy sacrifices Angel, as the culmination of a series of events that leave her normal life in ruins; faced with the same choice after another series of losses years later, Buffy finds the only way she can be both herself and the hero is to choose her own death instead.
It’s not until the end of the show that she discovers another solution. Resurrected into an existential crisis, she struggles to deal with the constant violence and even throws herself into being a hardened Slayer. When that doesn’t work, Buffy realizes that she must break the chain of one girl burdened with the weight of the world, so that she and every Slayer will be able to save both the world and themselves, to choose their own destinies freely.
Disclaimer:
Buffy Summers is from the shows Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, and is the property of Joss Whedon and Fox. She appears here solely for the purpose of roleplaying in
